Suspension and revocation of certificates, termination of service

Suspension and revocation of certificates

If you have lost your smart card (or the private key or signature-creation data for your certificate), you should immediately suspend or revocate your certificate. If your certificate has not been issued for a card and you think someone may have found out the password that protects your certificate, you should suspend or revocate your certificate , too.

Anyone who has access to the card (and the PIN code for the card), or to the private key (and the password to protect it), – depending on the type of certificate – can create electronic signatures on your behalf, can decrypts your encrypted files, can log in systems in the name of you, or can set up a website seeming to be legal and yours. If you have suspended or withdrawn your certificate, these actions will no longer be attained even throug possessing your card or private key.

The difference between suspension and revocation is that suspension just temporarily invalidates the certificate – the suspended certificate can be restored, that is, it can be usable again. Contrarily revocation is consummative and irreversible, the validity of a revoked certificate can not be restored. We advise you that if your card is lost, immediately suspend your certificate. If you can still find your card later, you can restore the certificate. If the card is not found, arrange for the certificate to be revoked.

Suspension or revocation of the certificate is free, we only charge a fee for the restoration of the certificate.

The validity of the website authentication (SSL / TLS) certificates can not be suspended, they are directly revoked, suspensions may be requested for all other types of certificates.
